An offline MCP server that extracts and serves image metadata (EXIF, GPS, XMP, ICC, IPTC, JFIF, IHDR) for LLMs or humans to inspect and analyze images.
Extract full EXIF and related metadata from images offline (including GPS, camera, lens, and timestamp data).
Analyze an image library to compute statistics such as most used cameras, lens distribution, or temporal and location patterns.
Debug or validate image processing workflows by inspecting orientation, embedded thumbnails, ICC profiles, and other metadata segments.
exif-mcp is a TypeScript-based Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that uses the fast exifr library to parse image metadata without external tools. It supports multiple formats (JPEG, TIFF, HEIC/AVIF, PNG) and multiple image input methods (file paths, URLs, base64, buffers). The server exposes specialized tools for reading full metadata segments, orientation, GPS coordinates, and thumbnails, and is designed for local, offline use. It is used in development and testing workflows such as the PlaceSpotter reverse geolocation service.
